Website Dictionary

Here you'll find definitions to all of that web jargon floating around out there.

Content Management System (CMS)

CMS is a computer application used to manage work flow needed to edit specified information on your website. CMS can be used from managing your products and sales, to posting an entry in your blog. Need to change a date, swap an image? That's what CMS does. Rewebbed offers Content Management for your website. Ask your Web Agent how CMS can make your website truly "yours".

Domain Name

A domain name is an identification label to define a realm of administrative autonomy, authority, or control in the Internet, based on the Domain Name System (DNS). Domain names are used in various networking contexts and application-specific naming and addressing purposes. A prominent example are the top-level Internet domains (TLDs) com, net and org. Below these top-level domains in the DNS hierarchy are the second-level and third-level domain names that are open for reservation and registration by end-users that wish to connect local area networks to the Internet, run web sites, or create other publicly accessible Internet resources. The registration of these domain names is usually administered by domain name registrars who sell their services to the public.

File Transfer Protocol (FTP)

Short for File Transfer Protocol, the protocol for exchanging files over the Internet. It is how Rewebbed places your website online. We house your website files on a public server that gives internet browsers access to display your website content to your target audience.

Hosting

Hosting is the term used for where your website files are located. Think of hosting as your virtual online office rent space. Every website is made up of files that display web pages, and downloadable content. These files sit on a server somewhere in the world, that your computer accesses when it is surfing the web. Your website files could be housed hundreds, even thousands of miles away from where your company or organization is located. It is an unavoidable fee that every website owner faces. The cost of hosting depends on the amount of visitors to your site, the content of your site, and who your hosting provider is. Rewebbed prides itself on providing affordable hosting, with 99% uptime.
